I noticed alot less viewstate in the anonymous/user viewing state compared to an admin state.  However some modules have not adopted this yet it seems.  The console module stores the settings of the module as well as the entire html code of each link item in viewstate.  As an anonymoyus/normal user where the module is just being rendered this is probably not necessary to store that information in viewstate.

I have the links module on a couple of pages and it also stored the edit link as well as alot of other information in viewstate. Is there a plan to go back and address some of these modules?

The viewstate in DotNetNuke is definately too large -we've already identified a lot of cases where we can reduce/remove viewstate (though to get true granular support a site really needs .net 4.0)-We're going to be doing some performance work in one of the next releases and this is an area we'll hopefully look at then.

What are the barriers for not requiring net 4 now?

We typically don't move to a new version of the framework for a year or two after it's released as not all hosting providers will have installed it. We only moved to .net 3.5sp1 with 5.2.0 so I think it's likely to be a release or two before we move again. Historically the module projects lead the way and that gives us a good idea of how disruptive the move may be -i know at least 1 project is moving to a .net 4.0 implementation and using MEF, so hopefully we'll get a sense of the risk soon (There are certainly some things we'd like to use such as granular viewstate, code contracts, MEF and dynamic handler registration)
