On my development machine I had DNN 5.6.2 running. I created a separate directory/database and successfully installed DNN 6.0. Now when I try to run DNN 5 I get an error message that it "Could not load file or assembly 'Telerik.Web.UI, Version=2011.1.519.35" Interestingly, this is the version that is use used in DNN 6 and not the one in my 5.6.2 install.

I tried copying the newer DLL from 6 to 5 but then 5 gave me an error when it tried to load <htmlEditor defaultProvider="DotNetNuke.RadEditorProvider">

I have not applied the Telerik patch described by Joe Brinkman (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Blogs/EntryId/3031/DotNetNuke-Telerik-and-IE9.aspx).

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Matthew

did you make the new directory an application (you can right click the folder in IIS and convert to application if you didn't). If thata not the issue then its likely that you're just seeing simple web.config inheritance i.e. the root website web.config is being picked up by the vdir - you can disable this in the new site via the inheritinchildapplications setting e.g. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/598235/deploying-dotnetnuke-and-separate-asp-net-application-together-possible-issues

Thanks for the suggestions. I had created the new (and initial) installs as applications. I also tried the web.config edit suggested. Neither of those worked for me.

What did finally work was:
  1. Copied the 5.6.3 upgrade over the 5.6.2 version (this all started as a 5.4.2 version)
  2. Copying the new version of Telerik.Web.UI.dll into the BIN directory (it is not included in the update file so I still had the old version)
  3. Updating the Web.Config to change the default html editor from
       htmlEditor defaultProvider="DotNetNuke.RadEditorProvider"
which was no longer available to one that was
       htmlEditor defaultProvider="TelerikEditorProvider"
Now my site is up and running with 5.6.3. I suspect that steps 2 and 3 alone would have worked as well. How this occurred when installing 6.x  I do not know but these steps seemed to address my issues.

Thanks for the assistance.

After resetting my VM a number of times what seems to have happened is that the install of DNN 6 made changes to my DNN 5 web.config file. I do not have a pre6 version of my 5 web.config but I think at least two things were changed.
  • It changed the default database from my version 5 database to the new version 6 database. Interestingly enough it did not change the legacy section only the new section.
  • I could no longer log in with my previous users (admin and host). I had to register a new user and set them to superuser in the database. Could this be due to a change in the machine key included in the web.config file?
I still had to manually copy the more recient version of the Telerik web ui dll and change the default htmlEditor provider from the RadEditorProvider to the Telerik provider. With those changes (and the new host user) my 5.6.2 version seems to be back to where it started.

I don't know how these changes occured. It could have been something I did - though I have installed DNN many times over the years without this sort of difficult. But if others run into anything like this then perhaps my experience will give them a way out.

I always prefer using separate install directories for multiple web sites on a dev machine, not nesting one within another. I edit system/drivers/etc/hosts file to be able using dedicated names per DNN web site.
