The sites are NOT nested one within the other. These were in separate directories. Though both were in the wwwroot directory that should not be a problem.

The 5 web.config had the same edit date as when I installed 6. I would have opened it to copy the connection string (same user but points to two different databases) . It is possible that I re-saved the 5 web.config file at that point and also that I inadvertently changed the connection string in version 5. This does not explain why the host and admin passwords would no longer work. I would not have changed the machine key.

please make sure, you didn't modify machine key from your DNN 5 installation by accident. Restore the value from a backup of your site.

Hi Matthew,
I would still recommend taking a look at the machine keys in your web.config. I've seen DotNetNuke occasionally decide to regenerate the entries when doing an upgrade.

I had forgotten about the shadow copy in Win7. I had a restore point for my DNN 5 web.config file from before I installed 6. When I restored that file my original Telerik.Web.UI.dll worked as well as my previous admin and host passwords.

While I may have inadvertently changed the database string, I would never have manually changed the machine keys. But somehow that did happen.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

Matthew
