carlos,

thanks for sheding some light here.  it sounds like you may understand the CMS well enough to do what i'm trying to do, i just won't be able to do it following the logical steps in the admin area.  do you think you could direct me on how to work around this issue to:

1. Use the DarkKnight skin with the Admin area pages, and
2. Use my recently installed skin, Freestyle (2011 ndesign comp winner) on my portal pages.

thanks for any assistance you could provide.

Cathal:

Thank you for your feedback.  I think I understand what you are saying but unfortunately I think there's still an underlying problem with the management of the skins or, with my interpretation and expectations on how it is supposed to work.  If it is the latter, maybe the interface could be improved a little to avoid this type of confusion.  I have been working with DNN for a long time and have not run into skin issues until recently when I started the migration of some sites from 4.9.5 to 5.6.2-3.

By the way, I created an issue in Gemini, it is issue DNN-17636

Kim:

Thank you for your vote of confidence but I don't know if I can help you with exactly the task you need to accomplish.  The reason is that I have never attempted to apply two different skins like you suggest.  I have always used only one skin for everything, production pages and admin pages.  And for now, that would be my recommendation to you, to concentrate in using just one skin.

As you may have seen, I did create an issue at the support site.  I think that there are issues with the implementation of skins and the admin pages and/or modules.

Sorry I cannot tell you more at this time.

thanks Carlos.  unfortunately, the 2nd skin doesn't play well with the admin area, but i want to use it for my portal pages.  what I've chosen to do is apply the dark knight skin to each admin page individually after i set the entire DNN installation to use the freestyle skin.  For some reason, it would not allow me to apply the skin to the admin page and then the children underneath it all at once.  it returned a primary key database error, so i'm having to do them one page at a time.

hopefully, they'll get this squared away in the next version of DNN, or maybe even post a hotfix for this version.
