please check the project references -when a new module is created it expects to find dotnetnuke.dll in a particular place - if you have an open dotnetnuke website in vs.net and click it to create the module the references will be correct, if you use a different orgainisational structure you will have to update the dotnetnuke (and possibly other) references.

This is a related but somewhat new question. I have Vis Studio 2010. It told me it didn't install the SQL Server Express on install. I have no idea why. I too wish to use it to try and build some modules. Where do I find the 'DotNetNuke_Community_06.00.01_StarerKit.vsi' mentioned above and how does it install with respect to VS2010? Is it an extension? or does it install separately? And I know DNN needs a SQL backend, so how do I accomodate that? Any ideas will be much appreciated.

you need to install SQL Server (Express) separately, it is required by DNN - if you plan to use non-Express version (or attached mode), you need to create blank database and sql server user with dbowner permission manually.

sschleiffer,

The install for the Visual Studio Starter kit can be downloaded from here: http://dotnetnuke.codeplex.com/releases/view/71896 - it is called: 6.0.1 - Visual Studio Starter Kit. This will give you access to the compiled modules projects for both VB and C#.
