I got the latest version of DNN installed on my remote server, no problems. A question about workflow though..  to install DNN I just remote–desktopped to my server and installed the site there. Now I realize I wanna do some coding naturally, in VS Express.  But I only have MSDE SQL express on local laptop, and the full SQL 2005 on the remote server.

How do I create a local mirror of the site, complete with a live data connection? I mean, there should be no  problems with being able to connect to the remote DB, considering I ‘own’ the server box. Or is it simpler to create a local mirror of the DB and just synch it up when development is done..  (sounds like a bad idea already, cause with me at least development is never done).

I'm used to using Dreamweaver to code classic ASP in, and using PHPMyAdmin to run the remote MySQL DB. Now I know I've switched to the right development environment, I just need to know how to roll out the site. :)

You have lots of options, you could develop complely in development and then push it to live using techniques such as http://www.ventrian.com/Resources/Articles/tabid/213/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/82/Moving-DotNetNuke-Sites-from-Dev-To-Prod.aspx

Some people instead use tools like the http://www.red-gate.com set of tools to move data/schema changes between production, and FTP any updated files (sql clarity have a handy free schema comparison tool as well http://www.sqleffects.com/Articles/Product/SFXClarityInfo/aboutSFXClarityCommunityE.html ), or if your servers are able to see each other use sql DTS/SSIS to push the data across.

Alternatively, some people point their development sites connection string to their live sql server, which allows them to test code. Basically, you find the scenario that works best for you. Personally I take periodic snapshots of my live sites, restore them to my development sql machine, and test new modules on them. When I'm happy I then deploy the new modules to live, at which point their tables are created.

Thanks for the info.

Being quite new to using MS SQL (and considering that I only have some limited version that doesn't have the Enterprise Manager GUI), can you point me to any articles on how to set up a secure remote connection to my MS SQL DB?

I am using EMS SQL Manager Lite, I'm guessing that setting up this type of connection could not be managed alone in that program, there must be some higher level security changes to be made?
