It's a provocative title. I run a website on 4.9.0 - thought i'd update it to 5.2.4 (last one that supports sql 2000). So went through the upgrade process. And of course it failed. Modules not working and throwing errors.

So I tried a clean install of 6.0.1 for a new website I'm thinking about creating to see what that's like. Got it working eventually but my god it's STILL full of bugs.

And some REAL basic bugs - wiki module for example it is impossible to edit the "Home" topic.
The maps module sort of works but doesn't do what it says it does and has curious behaviours.

So whilst I appreciate that it is open source and very kindly worked on by various volunteer contributers I really object to the message that this is a complete CMS because it isn't. Every version of it I have attempted to work with is full of bugs. And they just don't get fixed. (Maps module not updated for years for example)

The various modules you mention are just a handful of the thousands of modules that are available.  If those modules don't suit your needs or you find a bug you could try 1) Using a different module (either open source or commercial) 2) Contributing a patch to the specific module project 3) Creating your own module that solves your specific requirements.  I know many users who have taken one or more of the above actions and had great success.

Hi Gwyn,

FWIW yes, there some bugs but it you post up about them in the relevant module forum, you will more than likely get a fix of some kind.

For example, as regards not being able to edit the Wiki Home page simply do the following:
  • click Add Wiki Topic and create a temporary page
  • add a link to the Home page by entering [[WikiHomePage]]
  • click Save
  • then click the WikiHomePage link just created and you are taken to the Home page (you now have an Edit Wiki Topic link)
  • click the Edit Wiki Topic, make an edit and Save
  • this will then give you the Edit Wiki Topic link on the Home page permanently

I'm not sure the core modules being bug laden can really be mitigated by saying "well there are plenty of others to choose from". The core modules are just that - core, they are people's first exposure to DNN.

Now if the core modules are buggy, what about the the other modules that are being developed? [ I'm personally not interested in paid modules (although I did buy ActiveForums some years ago ] - there is no assurance of the quality. I just experience well-intentioned but buggy product.

The other important point is that the bugs may not be apparent to start off. So the Events module on my 4.9 site has been running mostly ok (it's needed various work-arounds to make it acceptable) however it is now a problem and stopping an upgrade to 5.2.4 because of the data that is now "stranded". So users make a commitment to the product only to be let down and stuck in the future.

[ Incidentally I tried to upload a screenshot of the response I got when I made my last post where it spat out 2 lines of text saying something about my post needing approving (unfortunately uploading is not allowed). One of the lines of text in its box was positioned mostly over the other so I couldn't actually read it all. So another bug :o).  I would have expected the dotnetnuke site to be the example of dnn working perfectly. ]

I'm not up on the latest list, but are you sure those modules are 'core'?

Are they in your new 6.0.1 install?
