Hi,
I know some of the following are more asp.net specific questions, but hope you don't mind me posting it here (since it's for a module after all).
Also keep in mind I'm coming from the MVC world, where the following might have been easier (for me that is)

I need to create a module where users can uplaod an Excel file.
This file will contain data that need to be imported (time & attendance data) and might take a few minutes.

So what I'd really like is doing things asynchronously, with the server updating the page (status of the process) via Ajax (jQuery is what I usually used).

Any tips / pointers on this?

ajax/jquery are both valid options here, though if you're running dotnetnuke 6.0 or higher you can also use the wrappers for the telerik proressmanager and progressarea (DesktopModules\Admin\Languages\EnableLocalizedContent.ascx has a good example of this). As to the file upload, asp.net only supports syncronous file uploads, so you'll either have to do it in 2 stages (e.g. upload followed by a redirect to a page that does progress indicator) or else find an async upload control for asp.net
