We're currently trying to migrate our DNN site from our dev server to a production server. We've tried following the blog post about it, but we're running into a snag.

Mainly, do we need to install a fresh copy of DNN on the prod server before doing anything with the database? Before doing a backup/restore on the database?

Thanks for any help.

hello, no all you need to do is add a portal alias for the new production server URL, backup the files and database and copy the files to the new location. Then you need to add the database - you can either detach/reattach it, or (as most people do) create a new blank database and restore your backup over the top of it (make sure you check the force restore option). Next, make sure you delete the user (as the record is likely "ophaned" as its link is in the MASTER database of the dev server, and then add the user back in - or you can run an orphan script to do this [ggogle for it]). Finally, make sure you update the 2 connectinstrings in the web.config to point to the new database and you should be good to go.
