I don't understand what makes a transaction log backup files so large.

I have a couple DNN sites - both 5.6.3. , SQL Server 2005.

"A:"  has large transaction log and small transaction log backup files:
The transaction log is 653MB, the typical transaction backup is 3 to 4 MB.

"B"  has a Transaction log that is 407 MB with transaction backup file ranging between 350 to 425 MB.

Site log history is the same for each - 15 days - and the site activity is about the same, 10,000 log entries vs 8,500.

Schedule History is larger in B than A, 2,900 record in B, 670 records in A since October 1. That' can't account for a transaction backup that's 100x larger.

What else should I be looknig at?

If I detach the database, delete the transaction log and reattach the database, the new transaction log will be created... do I lose the abiity to restore the database using the transaction log backups created from the deleted log?

Thanks.

Here is a good background article on SQL Server transaction logs.

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/networks/SQL-Server-How-To-Transaction-Log-Maintenance-for-Painless-Data-Recovery-3777461.htm

A good backup, maintenance strategy can keep your logs in check...but depending on how far back you need to store data for recovery you will either be storing bak files or logs.

So I guess the question is what's the worry?

I should mention one of my DNN installations has a 833mb database and a 4.9G log.
