I am looking to add some Google A/B and multivariate switching experiments to my site. It seems I have come against a DNN limitation that prevents this and I'd appreciate any feedback.

To implement this I need to insert some Google-provided script to the header of my page. The Page Settings property that allows me to enter text to the header seems like it has a limited size (500 characters?) which prevents the Google script from being stored. Is this correct?

As a workaround (or so I had hoped) I just moved the Google script into the first HTML module on my page. I expected this to fail. It actually passes the Google verifier - Google looks at the script I have entered for the page and indicates it's all good. However, while I accurately track visitors to the page no "conversions" are ever recorded, namely I might see 1000 visitors to the page but the link I am adjusting as part of my test (this is to test the size of the font for the link) is never being clicked (showing up as a conversion to the target page). I have the appropriate script on the target page too - again, Google verifies this all OK.

My guess is that this is failing because the script is not in the header of the page. The DNN admin UI prevents me entering this due to the field limitation.

How are other folks implementing A/B switching with this constraint?
