Hello everyone,

I am a beginner in DNN and I'm experiencing problems while setting up a database connection during DNN installation process.

I have setup and configured a new database using MS MQL 2008. I have my server name, my database, as well as user info (ID and password) for that particular database.

I am a beginner regarding MS SQL, but I am almost sure that all the information I am putting to set up the connection is corrent. However, I keep getting the following error displayed, while trying to configure the connection with my database:

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 18452
Message:

Is there anyone who might give me some advice on what I might be doing wrong and how to fix this issue?

Thank you in advance for your response!

I don't have a definitive answer but are you using SQLExpress at all?    You may need to input as .\SQLExpress  (with the .\ )

As this is a setup - you could also try setting the connection string in 2 places in your web.config in the sections of connectionString and under appSettings.  Then as you begin the install there should be a 3rd radio button option to just install it (Can't think of the verbiage right now).

Thank for your response!

I did create an empty database using MS SQL Server Managment Studio. I guess this is not SQLExpress.... but as I mentioned before, I am new to SQL Server and not really sure...

So in the configure database connection I did select a radio button next to "SQL Server 2005/2008 Database" option.

Then as a server name I put whatever is at the top of the Object Explorer in MS SQL Server Managment Studio", which is my "my computer/workstation name\SQLEXPRESS"

Then, database name, and login and password of the user account I created in MS SQL Server Managment Studio for that particular database (db owner - checked).

I've tried a lot of different options (such as putting a single dot or ".\SQLExpress
"in the server name textbox, or checking integrated security chechbox) and none of them worked. While installing DNN I followed the DNN installation webinar on the DNN website.

Regarding the second part of your answer: I am guessing you mean "auto" option. At this point I would preffer to avoid messing with the web.config file, since I am not too experienced in that area.

PS I have downloaded the free version of MS SQL Server on my own laptop and followed the procedures from the webinar I mentioned before and the installation succeeded. Still, I need to figure out how to resolve the issue on my work computer... I am doing something wrong, but have a really hard time figuring out what is it. I would appraciete any further help.

Thanks again.

I think your close - just for verification - make sure your user - under user mapping is Public and Owner - and I always add datareader and datawriter for good measure like this image:

To get to that - in Sql Server Mgmt Studio (SSMS) - expand Security - Logins - and right click your login name and select Properties.  Then go to User Mapping - and select & highlight your DB - then you'll see the above. to select the options and click OK

And then run your install wizard and have it resemble this image. Yes - your server name will be the same as mine in this image ;)

That should do it - hope this helps!

Thanks for the instructions Andrew - I really appreciate it.

I did everything you pointed out carefully, but unfortunately, I did not work for me. My user had db_owner and public permission, so I just addred the datareader and datawriter. I filled out the localhost instalation form acccrodingly, but it did not work. I also tried putting a single dot in a servername textbox and I noticed that the page started loading for about 10 seconds, unlike when I put ".\sqlexpress". Still, an error message showed up :(.

I think the problem might lie in file system permissions for my DNN installation. I added DefaultAppPool user (as the installation webinar says) and granted the modify permission to it. Maybe I am supposed to add those permission to some other, existing user? For example, there is something like "IIS_IUSRS (my workstation name)" listed there. Other than that, I have no clue how define where the problem is.
