Hi,

Although I have used a few different CMS before and work with VS2010 every day, I haven't used DNN before.  Anyway, I am looking to set up a DNN site (which has been built by a third party).  I thought it would be a case of simply copying the file structure to my server and changing the connection string in the web.config file to look at a copy of the database on my server, but I suspect there may be more to it than this.

The developer has supplied me with the full file structure but as of yet I haven't seen a copy of the database, I'm not sure exactly how DNN works, I know with Wordpress/Drupal that all pages are created on the fly and that everything is powered by the database and I assumed DNN worked along those lines - I just don't want to go to the developer looking for a copy of the database if I am required to set up an install first of all (which I assume would create the database tables required etc).  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Allan

Assuming your using DNN 6+ then all you need to do is setup the db change the conn string and copy the files over. The first time you hit the site a new Portal Alias will be created for you and it should just work. You will need the db that the 3rd party created as you are correct about all the content being in the db.

Allen, please check the connection strings in your web site. if they point to a dedicated SQL Server and not just use localhost and a filename (database.mdf), you will need the database backup. If there is "filename=database.mdf", you don't need to adjust the connection string but use the default file, residing inside /app_data folder - but be aware, that this works with MS SQL Server Express versions only.

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me, I was able to get a copy of the db from the developer which has now been set up on my server.  I am now getting another error.  When trying to hit the home page I am getting a 404 - my initial thought would be that if the actual URL is referenced within the database somewhere then I will have to change it to localhost to get it running on my machine?  Any advice would be very much appreciated.

 Thanks again,

Allan

Sorry, ignore this post - the problem here was to do with my connection string being malformed - I'm pleased to say the site is now operating as it should be.  Thanks for your help guys.

 Cheers,

Allan
