My DNN sites for years grow monthly in proportion to the amount of traffic they get until they are so large I must reload them. I usually lose my member list in the process. I am also having editing problems with html module freezing. The site is now down and my backup will not load as it uses Portal 0 and it says it cannot be null so I must reload site all by hand.

Site is www.underridenetwork.org which is non-profit. Thanks for help.

Do you have the site log enabled in the host settings? I would turn that off, it can cause the database for your site to grow quite large. Most people use Google Analytics for traffic analysis these days, and the site logs are turned off by default.

You should also setup some database maintenance scripts that backup your db/logs and shrink the log files every so often as they can grow quite large as well.

You shouldn't need to start your website over from scratch at any point in time.

Hi Stephen ~

Chris suggestion is a good one.  There are usually two main possible culprits for database growth, the SiteLog table (as Chris indicated) and the EventLog table, which records errors.  If you have additional modules installed, they could be contributing to things, but your site looks fairly straightforward and these are probably the areas to look at.

Can I ask a few questions about your site and it's environment?  All of this information can be found on your Host > Dashboard page.  If you wanted to send me the XML export from this module, I would be happy to have a look at it and make some further recommendations.  You can reach me at scott.willhite@dotnetnuke.com

  • What is your database Software Platforum, Product Edition and Version?
  • What is the size of your DATA and LOG tables?
  • What is your Scheduler Mode?
  • How many Portals and Users are in this instance?

Thanks for the quick responses. As the site is basically down I do not have the site info yet. DNN 6.1 seems to finally be incompatible with my version 4 skin. I cannot do site wizard because it does not like my backups portal 0 nor its version 4 skin. The HTML editor seems to be buggier than ever, I edit a quarter page of plain text and save it and the text just disappears at times, this is going to take forever.

I have tried to turn off all of the logging and empty whatever i could from the menu selections including site logging. My Cpanel at my host has traffic analysis going back 3 months but I do not think that is a large file. As a community user I do not know anything about database scripting, why does DNN require scripting for non-pro version? It seems to me that any caches or logs should be turned off or at least cleaned by default with an advanced menu for advanced users. It should also backup the users list. These have been my same problems for several years and hundreds of hours.

When I get the site back up I will pass along the specifics to track down the culprit.
