I'm setting up DotnetNuke 4 on a new Windows Server 2003 box.  This is a new install of 2003 Server.  I have installed SQL Sever 2000, Visual Studio 2005 and MS Office 2003.  SP1 has been applied to this server as well as any patches MS has as of 2 days ago.  Only .NET 2.0 has been installed.  I am installing/working from  the source.zip package.  I have followed the instructions given in the Install Guide and other pieces gleaned from other posts in this forum. The virtual directory is setup and running under the default web site, since I'm doing everything locally for this box. The box is connected to the internet, but it is not on a network, it is in a workgroup.  Now when I try to browse to the site using the URL http://localhost/DotNetNuke or from the browse menu option in IIS for the virtual directory I get the error message HTTP Error 404 Page Not Found.

On a previous install on XP Pro SP2 box I was able to install DotNetNuke 4 from IIS, by right clicking the DotNetNuke entry under the Default Web Site and selecting the browse option.  The install started and finished correctly and I was able to use IE to view the default page for DotNetNuke.

So at least one question is, are the previous versions of .NET required in order for the install to happen?

Can anyone shed some light on what is happening?

Thanks in advance for your help

In version 4+ the VD needs to be pointing to the website directory not the root DotNetNuke directory.  This is due to the reorganization of files that had to be done to get DNN to compile under the new project structure of VS2005.

Unforunately, smehaffie I have already done this as I said in my post I read and followed the Install Guide, which does talk about pointing the virtual directory to the website directory, where everything was unzipped to.

Is it a problem to install DNN on the Enterprise edition of 2003?   This is the OS I am using.

Has anyone else had a problem installing to a clean machine (meaning new hard drive with nothing previously installed)?

Couple questions, they seem obvious but one should not take it for granted.

  • Where is the actual directory located?
    • In the IIS wwwroot directory?
    • If not, have you given the Asp.Net account access to the directory?
  • In IIS have you configured Asp.Net permissions to use Version 2.0?
    • I know you say Version 1.1 is not installed but double check.
  • In IIS have you configured the default content pages in the website properties?
    • This can be found in the Documents tab of the website (virtual directory) properties form.
  • Have you compiled the website?
  • Have you trid navigating using the server name instead of localhost?

Couple questions, they seem obvious but one should not take it for granted.

  • Where is the actual directory located?
    • In the IIS wwwroot directory?  In this case it is C:\DotNetNuke\Website and the virtual directory does point to this spot.
    • If not, have you given the Asp.Net account access to the directory?  ASP.NET is for IIS 5.x not IIS 6.0, used NETWORK SERVICE as the Installation Guide says.
  • In IIS have you configured Asp.Net permissions to use Version 2.0? Yes.
    • I know you say Version 1.1 is not installed but double check. The only place/way I know to check is Control Panel\Add Remove Programs and it does not mention .NET Framework 1.1 only .NET Framework 2.0
  • In IIS have you configured the default content pages in the website properties? Default.aspx is in the list under the Documents tab and at the top of list.
    • This can be found in the Documents tab of the website (virtual directory) properties form.
  • Have you compiled the website? No and I did not compile the source on my XP Pro box either, but it worked.
  • Have you trid navigating using the server name instead of localhost?  Yes, did not work either way.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your suggestions.
