Hi,

First post to this forum - jumping head first into learning a new CMS.  Just a simple enquiry at the moment, but is it possible to split the navigation on a single site.

IE.  The Parent (or level 1) navigation to appear across the page (horizontal nav) and the child pages (level 2 and below) to appear on the left or right hand side of the page (vertical navigation).

I'm about to acquire a site to manage and it looks like the vertical navigation is currently run by manual links rather than a script.

Cheers,

Mikel

The simple answer to your question is yes. You can do that.

What you will need to do is customize your site's skin to use two instances of the menu. Assuming that you are using DotNetNuke 6.x, the menu is the DDR Menu. You will set the horizontal instance to show the root level menu. The secondary (vertical) menu will be set to show children of the current page.

And, with reference to your comment, no. The menu creates a set of links and exactly what is created depends on the menu's options. The DDR Menu is designed to render a set of links and a combination of CSS and jQuery is used to control the menu's behavior.

There are some good tutorials on skin design available. Also, there is good documentaion on the DDR Menu in the DNN Wiki.

Great - thank you.

Just found out the site is currently on version 05.05.01 (22) - so I think an upgrade will be required.

Think it's a custom skin, but I'll find out more in a couple of weeks.  Until then, back to the test site!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi

as joseph said

top

 dnn:menu runat="server" nodeselector="rootonly"

sidemenu

dnn:menu runat="server" nodeselector="rootchildren"

if you dont have a design set I would style one unordered list to be horizontal and the other one vertical  so the top one ou could do  ul li {display:inline;}

This gives you a start for your own skin or how to modify an existing one
