This has probably been asked but I searched and paged through but couldn't find my problem.  I am a newbie and have done websites in html and asp before but am new to dnn.  I host my sites on www.appliedi.net and have a virtual server with them.  I know that you can have multiple websites running off the same database but I can't figure out how to do it.  I need to have multiple "parent" sites like www.yourdomain.com and www.yourseconddomain.com etc.  Once I get the first site setup and running how do I do the second, third etc.  People are wanting to make their own edits so I am looking at CMS software.  Don't know much about database management or server maintenance.   I work with a lot of small businesses so I don't have real complex websites but thought this would be a no brainer to give them what they are asking for! :O)

Thanks

It's very easy. DNN supports multi-tenant at it's core. Under the Host Management you'll see a Portals link. You can create new portals there. Parent portals are what you want. Just make sure you add in the proper alias and then point the DNS for the domain to the same IP as you main portal (saves you IPs from your hosting company).

Now each "portal" is a seperate website on the same platform. I've done this for years hosting sites for dealerships. We easily had between 100 - 150 sites per DNN instance.

Yes, DNN supports multi portals at it's core. Also for each portal, you can set different portal ailas.

I am really not stupid but..... :O)  Have a couple of follow-up questions:

  • I did what you suggested and after hitting submit or whatever the button said it took me to my website and I am getting the under construction page that my provider uses.  How do I get the dnn pages to show up i.e. what files do I need on the site?  I assume I don't reinstall everything because as I recall, part of the installation was database setup.  I am sure this is basic but sometimes it is the little things..... :O)
  • I set up the new website using a temporary url of http://runforfreedom5k.com.mytempweb.... that my provider makes available to use until DNS is working.  My plan was to use this url until the website is done and then use the real name of runforfreedom5k.com as I phase out the old existing site with a different host and transition to the new DNN site when I change the DNS record.  I assume that I can change something somewhere when I am ready to point to the permanent url?

Thanks for all your help.

FYI...when I go to that link I see what looks like a "fresh DNN installation". Assuming you resolved the alias/dns
