Can anyone explain how the fileticket system works for files added as links?

Problem is that I have a site with a link to a file. We needed to update the file. This was done but the fileticket seems to have changed and the link is lost.

How can I re-match the file ticket with the file?  Is it stored somewhere?  How does linkclick.aspx work out where the file is from the ticket?

thanks

Gus

ps: I know how to generate a new ticket/link but that's no help since hundreds of people have the original link but cannot reaach the document.
