Dear Group,

I posted messages about my experiences upgrading along the recommended DNN upgrade path. I started with the path from 4.8.4 to 4.9.5.

  1. I had a problem first with a file in the App_Browsers folder...with two files, actually. Joseph Craig got me past that one. Thank you!
  2. Then there was a permissions problem with the 04.09.00.config file in the Portals/_default folder. I'm running DNN on a shared web host that I rent (NewTek), so I have limited ability to change file permissions. I am able to change the permissions for entire folders, however, and I changed the permissions for the _default folder and its contents to Read-Write-Execute-Delete from Read-Execute. That got me over a hump and the install progressed a few more steps.
  3. But then it choked at modifying the web.config file in the web site's root directory. Since I can't change the permissions on a single file, I had to change the permissions on the whole root. Gulping a bit, I went ahead and did that.
  4. The result was that when I tried to do the upgrade process again, I saw absolutely nothing...a blank web page. No DNN logo, no progress report, no errors. Nothing.
  5. I didn't know what to do so I restored all the 4.8.4 files. Everything's back to the way it was...but now I don't know how to proceed.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Steve Erbach

If you hit a hiccup like that with permissions or anything you should restore your database and all your original files and do it again from the beginning.  Any failure to write files or DLLs may still run database scripts, or not update your web.config properly and have you out of sync.. So you have to restore database / files... confirm permissions are quality and do it again.
