I was logged in to my site last night when this error came up.  I just can't seem to recover from it.  I upgraded about a week ago from 6.0.1 to 6.1.2.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

These two errors are displayed in the log among some others.

I've now switched the search engine schedule off.  but the site still won't start.  The /test.aspx works fine.

Is there a way to recover from this?

Although the issues with the search tables need to be investigated and most likely the tables truncated and then rebuilt, I don't believe that the two errors you posted from the EventLog table are related to the problem keeping the site from opening.

If you have direct access to the database using MS SQL Server Management Studio or similar tool, look in the HostSettings table for the setting "HttpCompression". If its value is not 0 then change it to 0. Then, recycle the application pool either in IIS manager, your hosting provider's control panel, or by making an insignificant change (add space at end of a line) to the site's web.config file and resaving or re-uploading web.config. Then, check if the site will open properly.

If that does not take care of the problem, are you using IIS HTTP compression or any third party performance enhancing software such as Page Blaster?

Thanks Bill,

That fixed the error. I will post the rest of the errors so we can figure out what caused the problem.

Which tables should be truncated?  And how do I rebuild them?

 Thanks,

Bertus

Wil Strohl's blog post explains how to clear out the search tables and how to cause them to be rebuilt:

Thanks again Bill.

I still  wonder what went wrong.  I was using the GZip compression and were doing so for a long time.  Probably two years at least.

Something else I saw and have mentioned this before, is that some pages seem to disappear from the menu.  If you have a link to the page you can still get to it but the page does not show in the pages list.  The settings of the page seems fine but if you were to loose the link to the page it is gone.

Is there a way to rebuild the pages table?

Regards,

Bertus
