Just getting frustrated that dnn is so complicated to migrate among servers and that it is not possible to just reinstall latest version while keeping existing content, modules and users unchanged if you screw up (as I have just done, for x-th time).

It should be possible to design dnn for easy migration and upgrades, or even fresh reinstalls, without all the complications involved.

Why bother about different versions of dnn - fresh install vs upgrade packages too? One should be enough.

To copy the database and files from one set of servers to others should be just that - copying, plus updating just the link to the new database. This would besides be marketing sound, as swapping providers would be easy and thus driving costs down.

Dnn is a great product, don't get me wrong. Just letting out steam here... It just is too complicated and vulnerable.

But keep up the good work! Cheers and good night!

Best regards, Ole J, Sola, Norway

Odd, I migrate sites between servers constantly and never have any problems. Whilst I always add a portal alias for the new machine, in recent DotNetNuke versions this is no longer necessary (as dotnetnuke will automatically add a portal alias). As such all you need to do is move the files/folders (and ensure permissions are set), move a copy of the database (either do a detach/attach or backup/restore - note: you have to resolve "orphaned" users when you move databases between database servers - http://www.fileformat.info/tip/micros...) and that should be you.

Note: sometimes folks are simply trying to move portal content in which case portal templates are a good option - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

Finally, the wiki has a useful page on staging content thats worth a read - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

whoops, forgot to mention when you move a database to a different server you have to update both connectionstrings in web.config.
