I've got an intranet site which I'd like staff to automatically authenticate to if AD credentials are present (i.e. they're logged onto a domain computer), but would (gracefully) show the site without logging in if they weren't. Using IP addresses doesn't provide a complete solution as we have non-domain devices on the same network.

Alternatively is it possible to disable automatic AD authentication but still auto-register AD users when they click either Register or Login?

I don't think what you're looking for is possible. For the automatic logon the AD provider uses the IIS authentication provider so if the system isn't on the domain but within the range of computers it's looking for you get the pop-up.

To do it when the user clicks on Register or Login would most likely require modification of the core code.

The only thing I can think of is putting links to WindowsSignin.aspx on the pages you want your domain users to have access to. With the current (05.00.03) provider it kicks them back to the home page when they click the link but the next version (05.00.04) will return the user to the current page.
