I love DNN but am constantly under pressure to explain why I use it over say weebly...

Just wanted to open the floor for a few comments either for or against why I should use DotNetNuke over say weebly or some other free web site builder...

Thanks,

Eddie

Weebly and DotNetNuke are very different things.

Weebly is a webhosting company with its own proprietory click and play web builder - locked to their servers and limited to the narrow set of features they offer.

DotnetNuke is a enterprise grade content management system that can be hosted on just about any microsoft web server, can be customised just about any way imaginable -  its not limited to a narrow set of themes or design models.

I encountered Weebly for the first time a few weeks ago when I offered to help update and redesign the website for the church I'm attending while in Florida for the winter. Apparently a number of hosting providers include the basic version of Weebly "drag and drop" in their hosting package. For a very simple website consisting of not much more than static text and images and links to files, etc. , it is not a bad website building tool. The free version was limited to no more than six site pages and provided no means to modify a "theme's" css or html making it very frustrating for me to use. When I came into the picture they were trying to decide whether to pay an additional $120 per year to include the "premium" edition of Weebly in their hosting package making the total cost $270 per year. They also wanted to set up an events calendar with enrollment capability, a pastor's blog, and a better way to catalog and playback audio mp3 files. Longer range plans were to begin allowing individuals other than the two co-webmasters to update their own ministry pages.

I demonstrated DNN 6.1.3 and a few possible stock skins to their committee. Once they saw the many free and commercial extensions available for DNN and in particular understood the ability to create user accounts having role based permissions - all for a cost less than one year of Weebly premium - they decided to make the move to DotNetNuke.

I guess I know what I'll be working on next week. Now if I can just come up with an image banner that they like as well as the one that happened to be available in one of the Weebly themes, they will be very happy.
