Hi - Is this possible.. to create a role that access to certain parts of the site.  Then allow a user to subscribe to the role for a payment.. which then give access to the content?

 If so, how.. right now, I just see an admin ability to add a user to a role.

Yes and yes. Search the store for "Subscription" modules. There are plenty that allow members to self subscribe to a role through a payment gateway (PayPal, etc and manage trial periods, expirations and renewals.

Several also replace the DNN registration module so folks can reg/subscribe/pay all at once.
