The skins you are attempting to use were probably designed using a version prior to 6.x. I find that a lot of free skins from the 5.x generation don't always work and I don't bother.

If you're looking for skins, try to find out if they have been designed or tested in 6.x. This will eliminate most of your problems.

About the dependent code - that may be true but a skin is *usually* just raw CSS, html and .ascx files and may not contain any real code per-se.

My advice - take the dark knight skin, copy it to a new folder and edit the CSS to match your needs.
