That was it ! - thanks Joe.

I had two issues:

a) Wrong control for the wrong job. I ended up using datepicker control, whilst this is clientside I suspect this isn't optimal for DNN UI guidelines. Nevertheless I'll stick with this at the moment until I can find a better example.

b) Entity framework properties were set wrong for date, I needed to get the value away from read only.

Thanks for clearing my brain and pointing me the right direction Joe....!
