Hi Mike,

We have successfully used AD Authentication on a few DNN Intranets, and it's been great.  thanks for all your work on this auth provider.

We have a client asking if they can use AD Auth, but have their Intranet hosted "in the cloud" - not on-premise in the same environment as their AD Domain Controller.

can you tell me if it's possible to have the web server communicate securely with AD over the internet, without VPN connection running, or would the web server need to constantly keep a VPN session running to communicate with AD?

is this set up wise, or is it best to just do a initial sync with AD?  i also don't think it's wise that Windows passwords are stored in DNN, even if they are encrypted.

interested to know your thoughts.

Cheers

Tim

Tim, I honestly don't know if it'll work or not but I'm leaning towards it not working. In my experience the webserver has to be part of the domain otherwise it can't read from the AD.

Also, AD passwords are not stored in DotNetNuke. When a user logs in a random password is generated and stored in DNN once the user has authenticated against the AD

Thanks for your reply Mike. I expected as much, but good to get your expert opinion!

Cheers

Well, it "would" work if the web server could communicate with a domain controller somehow.

I found a document that could be the key to solve this webserver-in-the-cloud-needs-access-to-AD-problem, read here.

Best wishes
Michael
