It's got nothing to do with your permissions on the site. Well, sort of it is. This is happening because of the permissions WindowsAuthentication permission on WindowsSignin.aspx but it's a required permission for it. It's because of the settings in Internet Options. You should be getting the popup outside of the network because the computer you're probably using then isn't on the same domain. Internally, if you have the site in your trusted sites or local intranet it should work. The only other thing I can think of is I can remember in the past that some anti-virus (Symantec was one) and some firewall software (can't remember the name of it right now but it was free and popular years ago) would block the passing of credentials.

Also, do use Firefox for any testing. It doesn't pass NTLM credentials by default. I don't know about Safari.

Hi, thanks for the quick response again. I have found the trick to make that popup dissapear, I want to share what I did and worked for me in case that anyone else have the problem.

Just have to configure the redirecting on Error Pages as following:

1.- Open IIS, expand the directory tree till you reach "Alias"/DesktopModules/AuthenticationServices/ActiveDirectory/.

2.- Double click "Error Pages" in content pane, you will be redirected "Error Pages" page.

3.- In this page, right click "401" and select "Edit".

4.- Select "Response with 302 Redirect" and Enter your DotNetNuke web portal's address so that it will be redirected back to form authentication when window authentication fail to process.

And thats it!! the popup went away and is not bothering me anymore. Now I can select between Standard and Windows Login in the portal's login page.

Thanks for your time, patience, support and everything! See ya.

If you don't want the automatic login to trigger all you have to do is comment out in the section of your web.config.

Mike,

I am having a very related problem.  When I go to my main page, it appears to be pushing me to logon, which forwards me immediately to the DesktopModules/AuthenticationServices/ActiveDirectory/WindowsSignin.aspx page.  This, of course, causes the browser to prompt me in a small pop-up for my username/password since we have that set for Basic authentication and not anonymous.  So, it appears to be pushing me into auto-login.  I want users to manually select the Login button on the page to logon, and I am not currently trying to do ANY auto-login.  As such, we have no IP's listed in the IP range to be auto-logged in.,

Why are we getting that annoying behavior, which we can get around in test by just again going to the main page without entering any information?

We looked through the web.config file but we aren't sure what we should be changing.  We followed the general installation instructions, and it DOES work when I use the login button and enter my AD username/password.  We are also getting the group membership registered beautifully in DNN.  But, we need to suppress the pop-up.

Many thanks in advance.

You are getting that pop-up because it is trying to auto-login. But, you can get around that by cancelling it and going to the main page. This is because of the cookies. You can test this by waiting for the cookie to expire (default is 1 hour) and then you should start getting the pop-up again.

There are a couple of ways to get rid of the pop-up. One is by editing the web.config file and commenting out the authentication line, but that is not what I'd recommend.

An easier way to do it is to completely fill out the AD authentication module settings page and then enter in an IP range that doesn't exist. Then the clients will never be showing up on a IP address that DNN will think it has to authenticate to, and the pop-up will never be shown.

That is similar to how I have our main portal setup here, except that I entered a valid IP range for our internal network. This is so that people outside of our network (general Internet traffic) do not get the pop-up, but people inside of our network get logged in automatically.
