sa user is the database Administrator user which could only changed from an user with the grand permissions. Basicly on install also the System Administrator is also added as SQL Server Administrator and could be logged in localy on the SQL Server using the SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio).

Other wise if you didn't have other databases on this SQL Server installed you could uninstall the SQL Server and then reinstall it in Mixed mode.

Normally you need to create a new database first then start the dnn installation with the database credentials.

If you loosed the sa Login, you still could logon as the Server Administrator on the SQL Server, if you using RDP and the SQL Management Studio.  You should then able to change the sa password.  The sa user should never used for the Login on applications, by security issues it is only to administer the SQL Server.  If you have set the sa user as a application user you have to Change all Connection strings on effected applications.

Create a new user for your application on the SQL Server and grand them to dbo Schema, and enable the db_owner role on the User permissions. Then create the new database.
