We have a site running on DNN 6.x with most of the page names and content written in (Russian).  Internet Explorer cannot open any TEXT/HTML module to "Edit Content" - comes back with HTTP 400 error "The webpage cannoit be found".  When using FireFox browser, everything appears to be working just fine!

The webpage cannot be found

HTTP 400

Most likely causes:

  • There might be a typing error in the address.
  • If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

What you can try:

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Go to and look for the information you want.

Internet Explorer reads the link to Edit Content as
if(dnnModal.show('http://dev.selfnet.com/%D0%9D%D0%B0%D1%88%D0%B8%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%8B/tabid/227/ctl/Edit/mid/737/Default.aspx?popUp=true',/*showReturn*/true,550,950,true,'')){__doPostBack('dnn$ctr737$ctl00$actionMenu$ctlactionMenu','3')};

...which means some non-English characters are used in page name(s), fooling Internet Explorer... FireFox works fine.

The same thing happens on a multi-lingual web site - English pages work fine, non-English (Cyrillic) do not.

AFAIR this issue has already been reported and should be fixed in a future version of DNN. Meanwhile, you may either turn off human friendly urls or use 3rd party tools like UrlMaster from www.ifinity.com.au.

Thank you, Sebastian... this is very disappointing - I just started to like DNN 6.x, and this was totally unexpected...

Is this problem specific to IE9 version?  Everything works fine with FireFox and Google Chrome...

What are the dangers of turning off friendly URLs - is the site going to become invisible to search engines?

Could you, please elaborate on "future versions of DNN" statement - is this BUG being worked on, when do you think this will be fixed?

The downside of turning off human friendly URLs is the visual appearance of URLs with IDs (like www.mydomain.com/tabid/2/default.aspx) instead of table names. Thils might affect SEO, but all pages will still be indexed by all search crawlers. Regarding a fix, AFAIK this is scheduled for one of the next versions, but I can't promise it to be included in 6.2.0 or 6.2.1.

Sebastian Leupold
