I actually spoke to the feature team about this recently as in the original design documents we were restricting messages to users who had a relationship (friend/follower) -however they said they'd decided in the first release to allow messages to all portal users. We will add settings in later versions to lock this down more, but at this time I'm not sure what version these will be introduced (at a guess I'd say our next major release)

As for group moderators, social groups are just a specialised role with a designated "owner" - we have the ability to change owner and add additional owners (i.e. other social group admins) on our to-do list.

Thanks Cathal. I believe the are two very important points.

The ability to restrict messaging capibilities I believe is a fundamental requirement for DNN to compete in the social space. Across many different industries and departments this type of policy is enforced widely. Also for general social sites i.e. facebook style where you have the general public registering, you will want them only communicating with their friends and more importantly just their groups. The openess to message everyone is a real dealbreaker in these scenarios and immediately enforces restrictions us as developers.

Don't get me wrong DNN6.2 is amazing and the work done in my opinion you (DNN Team) do not get half as much credit as you should. I know this is the first release of social components - but I do think this is a very important point and should be flagged as a must rather than to-do

Thanks again.

thanks for the compliments (and comments) - i encourage you to log such requests as enhancements to support.dotnetnuke.com as discussions can get easily lost in forums (make sure you set them as "journal" component -then when the team are reviewing journal bugs/enhancements they'll see them) - you can also add them under community voice and hopefully others will vote for them and accelerate their adoption (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Community-Voice.aspx)

I'll be demonstrating how it's possible to extend the messaging subsystem to support these kinds of scenarios at my DNNWorld session; while the new service location mechanism was (unfortunately) not really designed for this sort of extensibility in mind, it is nonetheless possible.  In particular, I'll be showing how one can disable messaging between unauthorized principal pairs.

So, if you happen to be attending make sure to drop in!
