I was wondering if someone could shed some light on whether it is possible right now to run DNN 6 on MySQL. Here are my findings so far:

As far as I could find there are is only a commercial .net connector and dnn data provider for DNN from devart which only supports 4.7. ( http://www.devart.com/dotconnect/mysql/download.html )

Other than that MySQL offers all the tools and a .NET connector do run an ASP.NET website with membership on a MySQL database. ( I see a tutorial on setting up the membership part here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/connector-net-tutorials-asp-roles.html )

I read in this post ( http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/118/postid/446009/scope/posts.aspx#446009 ) there is no urgency to have a dotnetnuke data provider for MySQL because MS SQL Express is free and runs DNN fine.

However it doesn't seem possible to get away from the single point of failure when using MS SQL Express. To offer high availability expensive licenses are required while all this can be offered using free solutions aswell but that would mean using MySQL.

So I before I spend lots of time researching and testing things out etc perhaps someone has done this already and knows exactly what there is to know.

Is it possible right now? Will DotNetNuke make it possible in the future? Someone got experience in creating a MySQL data provider for DNN6 and the trouble that comes with it when upgrading to new versions of DNN?

I am not aware of an existing MySQL data provider for DotNetNuke - and be aware, that you'll need one for every module you are adding to your website. If you need high availability, you will need a sql server cluster and a web farm with a distributed caching provider (included in DNN Pro or available separately from 3rd party developers).

The architecture theoretically allows it, in practise the use of stored procedures means it will not be practical.

Allright thanks a lot for the feedback so far. sql cluster and distributed caching is something I would foresee using free and/or less expensive tools, therefore the need for MySQL aswell. MS SQL Licenses are a showstopper for me unfortunately.

Perhaps in the future DNN can develop a provider for MySQL and use Migrator.NET for all the sql stuff so modulecreators can program their sql against migrator.net which then can then generate and execute sql scripts against MS SQL, MySQL etc..

Additional feedback is still very welcome.

It sounds like you would be the ideal candidate. You have the need and it sounds like you have expertise with some of the solution parts.

Step forward!
