Hi

Im trying to create a site using DNN, and this site has special requirements.

We need to have several regions, for example, United Kingdom, Middle East etc

Each of these regions should have a collection of languages, each having english, and in some cases other languages.

And each region should share elements and content (modules). I dont think this is possible if we use Portals.

But a user should not be able to navigate from one region to another.

We would also like to have users be able to login from any region. Again, this doesnt seem possible using portals.


I would appreicate hearing from people about how to implement this in DNN.

ATS, your requirements is not supported by DNN out of the box.
If you need different languages per region, you either need a custom Languages skin object or use multiple portals.
If each user shall be able to login to each region, you either need a single portal or synchronize user base (concrete: records in userportals table) across portals using DNN Pro, a 3rd party module or a SQL script.
If regions should share content, you either need to use single portal or modules, which may access content from other portals.
If navigation should be limited within regions, you either need to use multiple portals or a custom navigation, limiting navigation to the regional branch of the overall site structure.

There seem a lot of restrictions here. They create extra work and it's not clear to me what the advantage is.

I'm not fully familiar with DNN's internationalisation support, but it would seem easiest to create one big site. Use the menu to divide the site into regions. Translate only those parts where you feel it appropriate.

If (say) an English Speaker wants some information that is only available in Arabic why would you block them from reading it? They may not find it easy, but ISTM that it's the reader's problem, not yours.

I can understand why you'd want to have users not transitioning between areas, yet why you'd want to share some content. We do this with a couple of sites.

TBH you're reasonably restricted in how to do it though. By creating separate portals, you'll have to restrict yourself to only using modules that can share content across portals. We use Ventrian News Articles and Xmod Pro for this, and WebHarpoon to screenscrape everything else that needs shared. It's not ideal, but it works better than having one big site for the purpose required. You've got an additional challenge with the languages, which I'm afraid I can't help with!

So you can do it, just be aware you're very very limited in the modules you can use to truly share across portals.

As an aside I've always thought that the limitations on cross portal sharing/logins was a pity - the DNN structure *should* allow it without any loss of function or security. After all, portals on the same install are all in teh one database - it just makes sense.

 The reason for this is that there are pricing info that is different for the regions, however there is other content that is the same, and therefore should be shared.

Ok, it seems that DNN is perhaps not the best platform for this - which is unfortunate as we have already invested considerable time and money in this. 

I'm thankful for your responses and will carefully consider the options the you all have proposed.
