Steve's tutorials are excellent. We used them to develop exactly what you've described: authorize a DNN user credentials from an external application...even checking they are in the correct security role to access a specific service.

One note, Steven's examples uses a GET to passi n the credentials in the URL. Even though we're running our entire site under SSL, our security team was worried about IIS and other infrastructure logs showing clear text credentials in resource logs.

We ended up making chance to use a POST which has proven to be difficult to config on VB.

There are far more examples in C# but since our app already had VB web services we needed to click with it. At some point we'll port everything to C#

We essentially copied Steve's code and then modified it slightly for our needs.
