Form and List provides a list and detail view (using custom XSL, supported by built in XSL generator), i.e. you may get a list with title (data type Text) and a detail view with Title and Body (data type HTML). If you want a tree of items on the left and a detail view on the right, you should use more advanced modules.

I would do something like

runat="server" class="hidepane panename" in your content panes and then you hide them with jquery on page load

jQuery(".hidepane").hide();

 

and then you add onclicks to your link elements that opens the correct pane

 something like jQuery("panename").show();
