I wanted to follow up with everyone, as I found out the issue, which really isn't an issue at all.

When filtering the memberdirectory module by UserID, the module doesn't appear on the current logged in user's page. You'll see the module when going to a different users page. So the module wasn't disappearing and reappearing as it seemed.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Drop an instance of the memberdirectory module on the profile page.
2. Go into module settings and change to filter by User
3. Navigate to a different user's page to do tests and edit template/layout.

Hope this helps.
