Is core search module in 6.2 any better than 6.1x in terms of ability to search PDFs, and other functions that should be standard?

Or do I need to buy a third party search module?

I guess the answer to your question is no - PDF and other files are not indexed asfaik. If there is a third party search provider that is indexing files (not only the names, but is able to search the content of the files as well), let me know. That would be interesting for me, too.

Best wishes

Search Boost can be configured to index documents from portal directories. This is achieved using IFilter interface, so for this to work you need to install IFilter packages from Adobe (for PDFs) and Micrsosoft (for Word Documents).
