Ok I have a few ideas, one of them is suggesting that you do install the sql management tool and check that the db actually exists.. 

At that point, if you could see the db and user in there, I would be looking at the default settings that webmatrix uses to install sqlexpress.

Check the box has Mixed Mode authentication and not just windows authentication.

Thanks Nina. I have working DNN, though I'm a little uneasy about the database.

SSMS working and can see SQL Server Express
Followed video for manual installation
First try it of the installation script wouldn't connect with typical install
I next tired the auto install and it worked.
Installation ran and configured DNN

I looked for the database with SSMS but only saw System Databases nothing particular to DNN. I'm suspecting that maybe one of my previous database versions wasn't really uninstalled and DNN might have used one of those. Any words of advice here?

All is good (at least with my dotNetNuke local installations). At 3am in the morning I wasn't thinking soundly. SQL Express keeps its database in a local mdf file located in the App_Data directory.
