I love the message center feature, but the main thread list has one serious shortcoming that I'd love to see addressed.

Here's the scenario:

Three different people send you messages and you reply to each of them with "Ok thanks".

Here's the problem:

You're message center now has three threads that appear to be exactly the same with no context of who the original message was from.   Each thread  shows:

1) Your Profile Pic
2) From You
3) To You.

This is not the most useful set of information.

I realize that there are some issue that arise because the thread could include more than 2 users, but this is also how facebook works and they handle it in a way such that you still have context as to who the thread is from/to when you are the last one to reply.

I would propose the following:

1) When a message is between two users, the profile pic for the thread should always show the "other" user.

2) When the message is between multiple users, the profile pic should be for the last person other than you who contributed to the thread.

In both cases, the to/from fields should be adjusted appropriately.

This doesn't bother anyone else?

Jason, I'm looking for direction on tweaking core messaging functions - like the body length ONLY for the emailed message, not the entry form. You seem to be the 'expert' on modifying the core messaging module. Any hints?

All the modifications that I've personally done to Core Messaging have been to the javascript files for the module and those minor changes, fortunately, have already been added to the core.

The email templates (or lack thereof) would have to be addressed in the core source code which I've never really looked at. I'm not sure how difficult or easy it would be to tweak that code. It could be complicated by the fact that "messages" and "notifications" both seem to share the same limited template.

Unfortunately, that's about all of the info I can provide.

Thanks Jason. I've figured another 'patch' using the Global RESX file - although it's not elegant and it does affect notifications as well.

Thanks for the input.
