I've just installed a nice new shiny DNN 4.3.0 - I'm using SQL Server Express 2005. I guess this might be more of a SQL server question than DNN.. but anyway - here goes:

Where can I view the data / tables etc. in SQL Server Express 2005. I have logged on to the database server and using the Management Studio Express all I seem to be able to see are System tables... I would have expected to see a bunch of tables relating to the content, users, etc. in there. Any ideas? Am I looking in the wrong place?

cheers

Not having used Management Studio Express before, I would imagine that it is much like the full blow application. With that said, under the System Database directory, should be the list User DB's. If it's not presernt, make sure that your logged in to the correct instance of SQLExpress (you can check this under the Object Explorer\browse for more.)

Hi Chris,

thanks for the reply. I think you're right it is a lot like the full blown SQL Manager. I do in fact have the dotnetnuke user DB under the system database, but my problem is that if you click on the tables within the dotnetnuke database, all I see there are system tables (and only one entry called sysdiagrams)...  shouldn't all the DNN tables be here?

Now that sounds like a credentials issue. Who is the database owner? Did you use an object_qualifier for the DNN setup in the Web.config. What login are you using to access SQL DB?
Provided you're not using "Integrated Security (aka- Network Service)", try using that account to access the DB through the Management Studio. Also, under Security\Logins, see if the "sa" account is enabled (if it's not it should have a little red arrow next to the icon.). After enabling it, try logging in as 'sa'.

Hi Chris,

Yeah, I had a sneaky feeling it might have been the security issue. So I have now enabled the 'sa' account - initially I couldn't logon as this account, and now I can after changing the server mode to SQL Server and Windows Authentication. I logged on as SA and still I don't see any tables under the dotnetnuke database.  So this made me think... I logged in as the same account I setup in the web.config and this account actually popped up a message saying the password had expired......... after logging in I still couldn't see the tables.

Now with the password changed on the very account that my dotnetnuke site uses, I logged on to the site and it loaded..... how strange?!!? where is it getting this data form... I looked in the dotnetnuke folders on my server and there's an App_Data folder which seems to be where the data is coming from - there's a few .mdf and .ldf files in there....

how odd... how did that happen I wonder.... ? perhaps it uses that if it can't access SQL server on install??

what do you reckon?
