Hi all, now... at the risk of being unpopular:
Yes, I was one of those unfortunate few ActiveSocial paying customers - what a miserable, whinging lot we are! My site PokerDIY.com has been "Facebook-like" for 4 years now (go on, have a look) and has had deep social journal integration for the last 2 years with ActiveSocial - an incredible robust, customizable product.
I have Events, Galleries, 20k of Private Messages, ActiveForums, Profiles, Friends Groups etc. all working fantastically. Did you know, ActiveSocial had this incredible feature called 2-stage Registration? It was brilliant - dealt with spammers perfectly. Did you know you could customize the user-registration screen? Check this out! However... I have not been able to advance my site is 1.5 years while I have patiently waited for ActiveSocial to be migrated into DNN. I have since learnt that when (based on some mythical migration script) I eventually am able to upgrade, I will lose a LOT of functionality - e.g. the above-mentioned features, Events, Galleries, all my existing private messages.. plus I have to wait patiently for all module vendors to catch up (e.g. Ventrian) just so that I can be close to the site that I have had for the last 2 years.
I had a play around with DNN 6.2 - I really don't understand why the Settings/UI of ActiveSocial was ripped out. I don't think the migration process was well planned but as I said at the time - the only people who suffered in this whole debacle were the paying ActiveSocial customers. Everyone else benefited (as long as you were patient). I really wish a developer would develop a Social Product Suite which I could buy (oh the irony) - but to compete with the core would be folly.
I see there is a webinar on this - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Intro/Web-S... - will this be available as a downloadable movie? It will be the middle of the night in Australia.
Right, that's my rant over - I will monitor DNN/ActiveSocial migration (I am on DNN 6.1) and will post again in 6 months if I have figured out how to get my site to anywhere near how "social" or usable it was 2 years ago.
