We would like to upgrade our website from 5.6.1 to 6.2.2 without taking down the website. I was wondering what steps would need to be taken to direct all of my web traffic to the development server while upgrading the production server? Our goal is to update the websites without loosing any web traffic.

I don't think this is possible.

Your website will be down for less than an hour, is that so big deal ?

It's possible, but you need to make some infrastructure investments to make it work. We have a "read only" version of our site that get's copied over each day. When I say read only, we back up and copy over the db (using SQL) and files (using RoboCopy) and then run a PowerShell Script that updates the skin, several templates, etc that remove registration, forum posting ,etc from the public site. We also show a message on the skin (every page) that informs user's we're in "read only" mode.

Then we redirect traffic through our load balancer to the "read only" site. Once traffic has flipped, we upgrade the production site, test, confirm and then direct traffic back over.

No downtime and a nice protected window for maintenance, upgrade, etc

Steven,

Thank you for the info. I was hoping there would be an easier way of completing this.. I thought maybe I could temporally point the DNS server to our DEV server while I update the Production server. What I am finding is this task is not that easy to accomplish.

Maybe you could help me with another issue I am having? I have created a new parent portal/site on the the Dev server and I am unable to replicated the parent portal to the production/live server. I have not been able to find any information or instructions for completing this task. I thought I might be able to use the same instructions for upgrading to replicate the information from Dev server to the Prod server. Now Its starting to look like I just need to take the site down and restore a backup of the Dev db to the Production server...

Michael,
There isn't a facility within DNN to push a site from one portal installation to another. So, you're thinking along the right lines that a copy, restore would get you there. That said, when you do that ALL of the portals will be replaced...so any changes on production that are not on dev will be replaced.
