I've installed latest DNN 7 CTP on Windows 7 x32 virtual machine with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and IIS 7.0. Looks great, indeed!..

But, I could not see any module actions menu - there are no semi-transparent "Manage" button in / near module header (like one in DNN 6). So, I could not edit HTML module content or manage another module.

"Create new module" dialog in a control panel also not working - then I select it, area is expanded down, but then it not filled up with controls, like Module Name, etc.

Since there are no "Manage" button in Extensions module too, I've uploaded and installed new module through Host > Host Settings > Upload Skin / Container (not very clear way).

Maybe, I expirience a configuration problem - related to AJAX, IIS7 or some other components?.. Or it is just CTP-related things?

Did you upgrade or do a fresh install?  I am just guessing, but it sounds to me like you upgraded and then did not clear our your cached css files from your browser.  Do a SHIFT F5.

The Opaque Manage button is gone now from module containers and replaced with three icons instead.  It is a very nice solution (suggesting to improve:  the icons are triggered with a hover, in this era of ever increasing touch devices, these should be click not hover)

If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser this is most likely due to an IE specific Javascript error in CTP2 which has already been reported in Gemini. Try a different browser or if using IE try opening Developer tools (F12) before clicking Add New Module.

Redhound,
in order to access module edit options, you need now to be in EDIT mode - using "Edit Page" item in Control Panel. you will need to repeat this switch now after any reload, while using the new control panel. You may switch to a different control panel by modifying the selection in Host Settings.

Hi All, Firstly I want to thank-you for your time and consideration in helping make this a better product! We love to hear your thoughts and recommendations for improvement! I will be using Jays numbered points as a scaffold for my responses; however I will be addressing the responses found later in this thread as well.

  1. This bug had been identified once before but we were unable to reproduce. Could you please provide your browser type and version number in order to help us determine the possible cause.
  2. These have been slated to change for beta (this includes more relevant icons). Terms will be “Common Settings” and “Advanced Settings”.
  3. Based on Gestalt principals, the point made is entirely correct; It would be much more intuitive to align the icon to the left ( assumed relationship based on proximity ); However, this button is quite small, when aligned left this button will sit very close to the anchor text used for the menu items; Consequently this require considerably more focused motor control in order to avoid clicking on the anchor when trying to click on the bookmark ( see Fitts Law ). We do recognize this as a problem and will look at alternative solutions.
  4. This is a valid point and could certainly be added; I also agree that this makes sense in this section however implications of adding this to this section will need to be discussed.
  5. From a UX perspective this makes sense; as this would considerably simplify the UI ; however, the following should be considered:
    • We have a large community that is already using the product; On upgrade the experience will be considerably different and thus affect congruence. If the congruence is too severely affected then usability and UX is irrelevant as they will discontinue using the product. Consequently we are making small moves to improve the UX; 7.x is a move in the right direction.
    • Functions / features have been surfaced in the UI based on priority and expected frequency of use. This is also consistent with how many of our competitors handle these commonly used functions. By putting module management under the edit menu we will be decreasing the findability/ discoverability and and consequently accessibility of modules for new users.
    • While removing these functions from the action menu in the control panel will significantly simplify the UI it will also reduce the affordance of the control panel.
  6. Same response as 5)
  7. Will discuss a solution with the product team

Kudos to Ryan.  Nice well thought out response.

1) I installed on FireFox v 15.0.1.  I'm sure its just a CSS issue.  I'll try it again and see if I can debug it with Firebug and log in support.

2) Nice!

3) Understood.  However, one thing I hadn't thought about this until someone else brought it up, what  exactly is the affordance of the bookmarks tab?  It doesn't really save any mouse clicks.  It just moves an item from one tab to another.  It's a neat idea in concept, but I'm sure how valuable it really is.  Maybe there are use cases I haven't thought about.

4) Cool.

5 & 6) Nice.   I'm not super sold on these ideas, but just food for thought.  I sat through a sales presentation from SiteFinity recently and then had to listen to the decision makers discuss the comparison between SiteFinity and DNN and the general consensus was everything was "just easier" in SiteFinity.  Specifically, the UX was more intuitive and the non-technical people were more comfortable doing actions in SiteFinity than DNN.  So perhaps I am being a little over sensitive.  The UX needs some help.

7) Cool.

Then I click "Edit This Page" button in control panel, the page is just reloads, without any visible changes. It's a clean install of DNN 7.0.0.823 on a Windows 7 x32 VM, The same problems in IE 9 and Firefox 15.

In host settings, the control panel mode is set to "ICONBAR". Then I switched it to "RIBBONBAR", DNN6-like control panel appeared, and it worked as expected - I can now switch to Edit mode, add modules, etc.

Thanks to your help!
