This feature alows you to use multiple domain names on 1 portal

example: you installed DNN on the domainname www.mydomain.com but you want your second domain www.mydomain.net to point to the same portal

you would acomplish this by adding www.mydomain.net as an http alias

hint: if you have www.mydomain.com as a portal, add mydomain.com (without www) as an alias, because many users like to surf to sites without typeing that dreadfull www over and over again. otherwise these users would get an ugly error from DNN stating that the portal could not be found

Purplebox - perhaps you can answer this: does this have a negative effect on SEO and page ranking?

See this post here for more on multiple domain names and 301 redirects...

Hello

Thanks for the reply.

 Have I got this right?

Say I have a domain name  www.mydomainname.com I publish a site for this domain, then I buy 3 more domain names:

  www.mydomainname1.com

www.mydomainname2.com

www.mydomainname3.com

I assign each of my new domain names as an alias and they all point to the original: www.mydomainname.com

The user sees the same old skin and contents for all four domain names but with one IP address.

The benefit is: the user does not have to type the www each time.

I'm not sure that I get the point.

Why not give each new domain name a site and skin of their own, then all sites can link together and bump up the SEO ranking?

newgirl: for you domain to work without www; you have to add it without www as a portal alias, and make shure your DNS server supports this (verry likly it will)

regarding multiple domains:

There is reason to believe that having multiple domains with only a different toplevel domain will not affect your rating

Having unique and well writen content will always boost you more then you will be punished for details like multiple domains with identic site

regarding 301 redirect, thats an easy fix with a skin object, in *initialize*  terminate transfer, clear the response buffer. and set up the response object for 301 redirect
