I've got a client that is currently using Sharepoint to create/manage their company newsletter and they've finally figured out that it's not the right solution. Basically, it's a pretty basic site with links to articles and an admin section to manage which articles to post, which users can see which articles, article formatting/layout, etc.

They want an estimate (rough ballpark) on what it might take to re-build the site using the "right" tool. I recommended DotNetNuke(even though I've never used it) because it seems like the best solution.

So, just looking for some input.
1) Is DotNetNuke the "best" tool to handle this sort of thing? Not sure if there are any good extensions or not that would help...I'm sure there are.
2) I'm a php/MySQL coder, have LOTS of web experience, html, css, WP, etc. but no experience with .net. Here are the rough numbers, with built in time to learn the system/language, does this look somewhat close for a time estimate:
Set up DotNetNuke on company server - 4 hours
Install and configure components - 8 hours
Implement HTML and CSS templates - 20 hours (only 1 'main' presentation template and then 4 different article templates)
Build newsletter forms, delivery rules, admin, etc. - 65 hours

...and then some extra hours built in for testing, troubleshooting, etc. I'm trying to estimate high since I'm not really sure what will be needed. I'm going to set up a 'practice' DotNetNuke instance on my own site tonight to try this out, go through some basic steps, look through configuration options, etc. but just wondering if there are obvious line items missing or if it looks like my time estimates are way off...

Thanks!!

You can drop an HTML module on a page, add the HTML, hyperlinks, etc to it and then dictate who can edit and view it. That's part of the core DNN package and sounds like it would work well for your client.

The template estimate may be in the ball park but I'd say the rest are high but I've been using DNN for a while now and know it's easy only because of that.

Installation - 4 hours isn't bad but I can usually set it up within 10 minutes and this includes manually creating the database, the DB user and entry in IIS. Stick with this because you are new to DNN and it may take more time if you're installing it with their hosting company, who may not be very experienced with DNN.

Install and configure components - sounds like you'd only need the basic modules and thosecome pre-installed. May be a little on the high side.

Templates - these are called skins in DNN and for me was the hardest part. You can always try to buy a skin that's very close to what they want and tweak it. I've done that once but learning how to skin in DNN is still the best appraoch.

Build newsletter forms, etc - not sure since I don't know what's involved but you may need to build some custom modules if the DNN core modules don't fit your needs. Building modules isn't hard and you can use any language supported in .net.

That's probably the best I can do without more details on your project but good luck and post early and often if you get stuck.

Mark,

Excellent, thanks for the input and tips. I figured it wouldn't take that long to set-up/configure, but we may have to work with our IT dept. for some of it, so I went ahead and added some extra hours in there.

I'm sure I'll be posting more if this is the route they decide to go with.

Thanks!
