I'm creating a new social / business network called "East Anglia Developer Network".  I've gone live (beta only) and it seems that journal messages are limited to 250 characters, but comments are not.  I'm guessing that this isn't configurable at the moment, but I was wondering the reason for the 250 limit. I'm just exploring the possibility of extending it to say 1000.

This appears to be the same in version 7.  I'm sure there is a good reason, but people who want to start a conversation in a group may well want more than 250 characters.  Has anyone else increased the limit?  or is there a rationale that says "Don't increase it because..."

Thanks for your help.

I don't think there is a reason, you may try to increase field size in the database and insert/update stored procedures, the limit might not be included in the business layer, otherwise you would need to modify DNN library code as well and recompile.

 Thanks Sebastian,

That's what I figured. I'm going to look at extending it, my only concern is that I'm not using it as intended, but I know my users will want to post in groups with longer messages than 250 characters.  Perhaps I should be using forums instead. Or do forums integrate with groups? i.e. can a group have it's own forum?

Active Social had the option to integrate a forum per group into group display - I am not sure, whether this option exists out of the box for new DNN Core groups feature.

Thanks, yes that's what I remember too.  I'll have a look and see what happens.
