I thought it was <sorta> the other way around, otherwise why would visiting the windowssignin.aspx page log in a user in mixed mode?

On that same topic, what is the difference between these two URLs?

http://website/DesktopModules/Authentication/Logon.aspx
http://website/Admin/Security/WindowsSignIn.aspx

If you manually visit windowssignin.aspx then you are manually firing the authentication process instead of it happening automagically. In full authentication mode windowssignin.aspx is always hit.

The difference between the two URLs? http://website/desktopmodules/authentication/logon.aspx is left over from Tam's original module that you installed on your site and was changed to the second URL when it was incorporated into the core. I just went back into the DNN releases to 3.0.13 and can't find any indication that there's ever been a directory call Authentication under DesktopModules in the core code.

EDIT: To further clarify my first sentence in this post. If a user logs in manually using the DNN signin.ascx page there's code underneath that also calls the Authentication code if the user doesn't already exist in the database and if Windows Authentication has been checked on the Authentication page. This is one of the potential stumbling blocks that's faced when trying to get the AD Provider separated from the core. It's tied into a number of areas of the core and if it's not there, as it could be an optional install like any module, then all heck would break loose.

Hi, I am using 4.5.3 and think there are two quite fundamental bugs,

1: if in 'forms' authentication an AD user using windowssignin.aspx will have an account created (good and fine when roles is checked in DNN auth) but when in 'windows' authentication' if no account is found in the database the site infinitely redirects to itself (can't find login so redirect to login. ad infinitum), remembering there is no DNN authentication menu option in 'windows' auth.

2: the usernames are now case sensitive (this is really dopey) if you have an account and can fly straight in to a website have a go at logging of your windows session and logging in with a capital first letter, remembering that windows usernames are not case sensitive, I think DNN should do this two.

I thought I'd write this here as I don't know where you submit bugs? I do understand issue 1 is really old and there are many work arounds but issue 2 is a real suprise to me, please install 4.5.3 AD and have a go, I though I was going mad(er)

1. Is there a particular reason you can't use Forms authentication? Windows authentication is something that will be looked at in the future.

2. If you read my blog and the sticky posts you'll see that this is a bug that cropped up in 4.5.1 and is fixed in the 4.5.4 release (currently undergoing testing). It was a simple oversite of case sensitivity in programming and not intentional.

Point taken,

1: I'd like the users to be forcefully logged in. (also because there is no indication the app does not really support windows auth! - it's in the web.config)

2: That's great. The folk I work for keep me pretty busy so I don't really get the time to read the posts very often. I've hacked a string ToUpper() in line 322 - (AspNetMembershipProvider.vb) & 62 (AuthenticationController.vb), dirty fix.

I await 4.5.4 with great anticipation.

thanks

Jeremy
