Try a clean copy of your web.config. I ran into a similar problem a couple of years ago, and found that every time I changed the app pool settings it changed my web.config also to the point where everything was totally messed up.

I've seen that recommended before, but I'm not sure what a "clean copy" would look like. Is there a web config in the install package I can begin with perhaps and then customize with the bare essentials - which would be sql connection strings I presume. If I had things functioning at any time I could roll back - but this has been an issue ever since upgrading to DNN 7.

Thanks

Yes there is in the install but not in the upgrade package. Without a web.config the site would never even launch to do the install. I'm just surprised that it even did the upgrade under the classic pipeline didn't switch it over to integrated or give you an error/warning on the upgrade.

Well, after 3 weeks and thousands of dollars burned we've decided to just roll back to 5.X and not mess with it for the time being. My client is going to look into other frameworks (I'm not sure what's availalbe) as DNN has cost them over 10 grand now and they still do not have a functioning site. Thanks you for your help - I may be back if they decide to stick with DNN - a recomendation I certainly can not make, but ultimately it's up to them. They've invested a lot of time in some LMS modules that they likely can't stomach throwing away.

If feel optimistic I may try the upgrade once more after rolling back. If so, would you recommend upgrading to 5 1st tehn 7? Also, can I run 5.X in Integrated Mode? If not, how would I do an upgrade in that mode? Thanks again Mike for your help.

I had to go back and look at the release notes from previous versions. 5.0.3 will work under the integrated pipeline but the minimum version of DotNetNuke needs to be 5.4.4 so if that's where you're at you should be good. In the past I had no problems switching my AppPool from Classic to Integrated and back again when I was testing the 5.0.3 provider.

I haven't tried any upgrades of a working site to 7 yet as the webserver here at work is still running on Server 2003 and I can't do an upgrade to 2008 on it but an upgrade under integrated would be the same as it would be under classic.
