Hi folks,

This is my first posting on the DNN website.

I have a DNN site (6.2.5) that I've had up and running.  Earlier this week I went to make a backup of the site and inadvertently deleted the web.conf file on my GoDaddy hosted site and didn't have a backup (don't ask).  I made a copy of another installation which was also running 6.2.5.  I changed the database connection information in the web.confg and all seemed to be great.  The site came back up and looked good.

When I tried to log into the site, I get an error that the username and password are not correct.  I did some research and found that the machine key doesn't match.  Can someone tell me how I fix this?

Thanks!

Ouch! Your best bet is to try to locate a backup of web.config and the all important machine keys somewhere. Have you contacted GoDaddy support to see if a backup is available - even for a fee if necessary?

If there is no backup or record of the machine keys it will be possible to register a new user and provided that you have database access with a tool such as MS SQL Server Management Studio or GoDaddy's own MS SQL Server web-based management tool either modify the new user's database information to make them a host user or to copy the password and salt from the new user to the existing host or admin user's database information. Please see the following Wiki entry for more information:

After you have gained host or admin access to the site you will be faced with the problem that ALL users will need to have their passwords reset manually. Hopefully your site does not have hundreds/thousands of users! You may also find other areas of the site which do not work properly or throw errors if the web.config file that was deleted contained configuration information that the other 6.2.5 site's web.config did not.

Bill,

Thank you so much for such a quick and thorough reply!  Luckily, I haven't implemented the site yet so I only have a couple of users registered.  I'll take your advice and dig into the database.

Regards,

Rich
