I have specific links to files on our web server that need to be retrieved by DNN clients using FTP. Anonymous access is not supported by our hosting company. The syntax given to us works when the LINKS link is accessed using Firefox. The syntax also works in IE if we specify only the login credentials and domain name with no directories or filenames. But I want the link to retrieve a specific file -- not a directory or the whole FTP site.

Unless you tell me different, it appears that this is the way IE works -- by design. By the way, anonymous access to get a file does work.

Login fails when we use a username and password to get into the FTP site AND specify the directory and filename.

The username given to us does have an underscore in it. The password does not. I have played extensively with the two major FTP settings in IE -- folders and passive mode.

Is IE running correctly by design? Or, am I missing something?

Thanks, Bill

Found the answer in a Microsoft KB article:

"The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message Occurs When You Try to Access an FTP Site

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328785/en-us

It turns out IE 6 sends its first request to an FTP server as anonymous. On the second try in the same window it will use credentials. This works fine if you are typing the credentials into the address bar (to do it twice) but as a link from DNN or any other hyperlinked web page it doesn't work.
